How to Apply

Through the College Prep application process, you help us learn about your interests, talents, and character. We’re here to assist!
Most students begin their high school search in 8th grade. We also accept applications for 10th and 11th grades, although space is limited. College Prep welcomes new students only at the start of the school year; we do not accept applications or requests for midyear transfers.

Students who are interested in College Prep compose their applications with great care and integrity. In honoring this hard work, our Admission Committee reviews all applications holistically. With great thoughtfulness, we assess if a candidate will be a good fit in our community.

To begin the application process, log into your Ravenna account. You will find detailed instructions once you add The College Preparatory School to your list of schools. College Prep joins many independent schools in the San Francisco Bay Area by sharing common recommendation forms and deadlines. We also agree to abide by the Principles of Good Practice and Bay Area Athletic Recruitment Practices to better streamline the admission process across independent schools.
Please note all our admission programs require advance registration. To create your Ravenna account, please start the process by clicking here.

  • Application Requirements

The admission application is a multi-step process, and we advise families to start the application process early in the fall. Current prospective families are invited to learn more about our kind and joyful community by attending a variety of admission events.

Once you are ready to begin the admission application, create an account in Ravenna. The application must be completed and submitted online through the Ravenna portal and consists of the following documents:

    1. Family Information (Preliminary Application)

    5. School Report Cards/Transcripts from the past two years
    6. On-Campus Interview
The priority deadline for the 2018-2019 school year is January 11, 2018. Families who miss this deadline should contact the Admission Office for further assistance.

  • Visit Our Campus

Due to space limitations, all admission events are only open to families of current 8th graders and older. Advance registration is required for all admission events. Information about registering for the year’s admission events is available through Ravenna once you have added us to your list of schools, beginning in late August.

    Open Houses
Although Open House attendance is not required for admission, attending our Open House allows us to get to know one another and for you to experience College Prep in action. Parents, guardians, and their teenagers will have the opportunity to speak to teachers, current students and parents, coaches, and administrators; attend mini-classes; and walk away with a better understanding of why College Prep might be a great fit for the student. Open Houses are offered in October, November, and December.

The Open House dates for the 2017-18 admission season are Sunday, October 8, 2017Saturday, November 11, 2017, and Sunday, December 3, 2017Advance reservations are required through your Ravenna account.
    Parent Tours
College Prep looks forward to partnering with our families in educating their teenagers during this exciting time in their intellectual and personal development. Our Parent Tours allow parents and guardians to experience College Prep during a typical school morning and tour campus within a small group setting. Parents and guardians are invited to ask questions about College Prep’s philosophy, curriculum, and offerings guided by a member of the Admission Office staff. Parent tours are offered throughout the fall months.
    Student Visits
We invite all interested students, 8th grade and older, to come for a visit to College Prep. Since every student is different, a visit allows the student to shadow classes and understand how the College Prep experience might suit him or her. During a Student Visit, we will match you with a current Prep student who will take you to his or her classes and answer any questions you have about our community. You will likely be invited to contribute to the class discussion and engage in a class activity as if you were a current student!
Student Visits begin in late September and conclude in December. In a typical week, we will host visitors both morning and afternoon on most days. Although the prospective student’s College Prep application does not need to be complete in order to visit, all visitors must complete their profile in Ravenna and add College Prep to their list of schools.
  • Guidance for International Applicants

College Prep is home to a robust community of scholars from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including a very small number of international students (defined as those who do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status.) We invite students from all backgrounds and experiences to consider College Prep as a potential high school home. While the application process and requirements are the same for all applicants, we encourage international prospective students and their families to keep in mind the following when considering College Prep:

    • College Prep does not work nor partner with any international placement agencies and organizations. We warmly invite interested families to contact Admission Office staff directly.
    • All international applicants must be fluent in English and must be able to fully exercise their English fluency in the classroom. College Prep does not offer any English language learning programs (e.g. ESL or ELL), and except for world language courses, all of our classes are conducted in English.
    • College Prep is a day school. We do not have a boarding program, and we do not organize homestays for international students. International students’ family situations are a factor in the Admission Committee’s deliberations; we strongly prefer that students relocate to the Bay Area with their immediate families.
    • International applicants are required to complete the same requirements as other applicants to College Prep, including sitting and submitting ISEE and/or SSAT entrance exam results and completing an interview with a member of the Admission Committee. Moreover, we expect that interviews will be conducted in-person on campus though accommodations can be requested if a visit to our campus is not feasible on a case-by-case basis and with advance notice.
Applicants who hold dual citizenship with both the United States and another country are considered as domestic applicants to College Prep as they will not need a visa to study at College Prep.
  • Entrance Exam Requirement

College Prep requires that all applicants take either the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) or the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) as part of the admission application process. The College Prep admission office holds no preferences for either exam, and one or both results can be submitted for consideration. We are unable to accept other high school entrance exams, including the HSPT in lieu of the ISEE/SSAT requirement.

Additional information about current year registration is available through Ravenna once you have added us to your list of schools.

  • Interview

As part of the admission process, each applicant is required to be interviewed by a member of the College Prep faculty community.

The College Prep interview is an opportunity for applicants to ask questions about College Prep one-on-one and more broadly discuss their interests and goals for high school. Interviews always only one student with one interviewer and usually lasts around twenty-five minutes. It is typical for our interview to fall on a different day than the Student Visit which allows for students to process their campus experience and consider more thoughtfully how College Prep is a good fit for them.
